Your Soul’s Murmur: How Longing Guides You to Remember Who You Are

That feeling of longing. A yearning that you feel in the core of your being. Maybe you describe it as an ache in the heart, a sense of incompleteness, or a persistent desire for something intangible. It wakes you up in the middle of the night, pulling at you, because something essential to your well-being feels like it is missing.

It’s not the longing for someone who has passed from your life. This is something different. It’s a sensation that there is MORE. Something you’ve forgotten.

I’m longing to know who I really am.

I’m yearning for more joy in my life.

I’m longing to show up more fully.

I’m longing to fulfill my purpose.

I’m yearning to express my real self.

I’m longing to know my right next step in life.

Longing does not mean that there is something wrong with you! Please don’t tell yourself that you should feel satisfied with your life, because you’ve ticked all the right boxes. This isn’t dissatisfaction. Longing can reside alongside your great life. In fact, when you tune into this feeling of a yearning for MORE, it becomes a guide to even deeper parts of your potential.

Longing is Your Marker

Longing is your marker that there is more. It can awaken parts of you that have been waiting in the shadows. This feeling of longing is how your soul calls you to remember.

A feeling of something important that sits just out of my reach has been a repeating theme in my life. I learned that I can’t retrieve it by figuring it out. It’s not a linear thing, so that’s not the way to it. I’ve needed to open up to the longing itself to receive what it’s pointing towards. Longing has shown me that there is a whole world on the other side of my comfort zone.

So, it’s vital that you pay attention to your own longing. When there is an opportunity for quantum leaps in your own evolution, your feeling of longing often intensifies. Don’t dismiss it in your hurry to focus just on what’s practical. As you acknowledge it’s presence, you give it meaning. Then it can serve as a guide, helping you identify and pursue paths that you might have been ignoring.

At its root, longing alerts you that there is something to remember that is truer about you. This is where you retire the old stories you’ve believed about life. Like the things you think you cannot have or do. That you are alone and unsupported. That you aren’t loved. That you cannot have abundance. Creating your life in alignment with your longing can inspire you to new forms of purposeful, creative or artistic expression. It becomes a channel for your soul’s wisdom to manifest in the physical world.

Give Yourself Space

A few suggestions to open doors:

  1. Imagine your life where the longing is fulfilled. Notice how you feel. Consider what changes or actions would bring about this picture.
  2. Reflect on your personal values and beliefs. Longing often aligns with deep-seated values or aspects of yourself that have been neglected or buried.
  3. Pay attention to situations, places, or interactions that intensify a feeling of longing. This can help identify specific areas of your life that are calling for attention or change.
  4. Experiment: try out new activities. See if they resonate and if they impact the feeling of longing.

Last year I co-led a program in Spain called the Moreness Retreat. This August, I’m publishing my book, Unconditional Remembrance, Your Connection to Source. As I said, these are important, repeating themes in my life.

Give space to listen to your own longing. This is your heart speaking to you! If you feel a yearning for more, it’s because something in you is awakening and asking you to listen closely. Inside of you is something to remember.
