If someone asked you what matters to you in life, what would you say? I’m really asking, what gives your life meaning?
Would it be easy for you to respond?
In fact, the push of life often obscures the essence of why you do what you do.
Your actions become automatic.
Awareness—and gratitude—vanish in the flurry of appointments and obligations.
What gives your life meaning?
If you get quiet inside and ask that same question of yourself, notice what comes to you. Is the picture different? Is there something from your deepest self that you had not recognized or been willing to express?
Pause here for a moment. Flesh out this new picture. Give it detail. Pay attention to the feeling in your body as you embrace this new picture.
Life begins to work differently when you allow what gives you meaning to take root.
Let your picture unfold, expanding and changing as you take action. This is a dynamic process, bringing new dimensions of meaning as you are willing to align with it.
Of course, life situations change. Your choices may change. With this kind of reflection, your decision-making deepens, connecting your actions with your essence.
Why is this important?
If you know what gives your life meaning, then you know your direction. When you align your actions with this new vision, you ground the picture in the physical world. Grounding allows for manifestation.
When you connect with something that gives your life meaning, you find that it sustains and impels you, nurturing you and provoking you to move forward. Your next step emerges, followed by another.
What gives your life meaning offers both a container and a pathway for your life.
Commitment to Yourself
Do you have a commitment to yourself to live your life aligned with what gives it meaning? Do your actions reflect this? If not, what needs to change? What is your next step? And the one that appears after that…?
“Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life.
It is a waste to be asking the question when you are the answer.”
~ Joseph Campbell
Inner Reflection
Take a breath. Release it. Take another. Devote some dedicated time of concentration/meditation. It doesn’t need to be hours of quiet, perhaps only 15 minutes. Then allow the question to simmer within you. Let responses bubble up into your awareness. Notice new ways of thinking, of images or ideas that arise spontaneously. Pay attention to your dreams. Let it happen. Be aware. See where it leads you next. Let yourself savor this process of receiving from yourself. Don’t judge whatever comes up, just receive it. Make notes.
You may want to share something from this process. Sharing is an important way to anchor an insight in your body. It leads you to deeper insight. It stimulates action. Feel free to use this arena to share whatever moves you.

I read a wonderful book about creativity and giving your life meaning. The book is called, “Meaning… the secret of being alive” by Cliffs Havener.
Thanks for sharing this, Peter. What did it offer to you personally? Laurie
